TestimonialsPrior to moving to Kansas City, I held jobs in small towns that were typical desk jobs: you sit at your desk all day, don’t really move much, staring at a computer screen and working away on whatever task is assigned to you. One of my employers was a bank located up the street from several fast-food places, and since they were bank customers, they often gave bank employees free or discounted food. So, I ate there a lot, since it was close and cheap. Before I knew it, I’d gained about 35 pounds and my energy was pretty much non-existent. I knew a change needed to be made; I just lacked the motivation to make it. A few months after I moved to KC, I found out about the Pirate Fitness Center, and for a very inexpensive monthly fee I could have whatever use of the gym I wanted during its open hours. My friend, LeeAnn, and I started attending Boot Camp Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and were more often than not the only two in the class. I hated getting up early, but LeeAnn was my ride to the gym, so I forced myself to get up and get going so she wouldn’t be outside waiting on me, and so she wouldn’t have to do it alone. After a while it became a habit, and I got to where if I missed a class I felt like I was dragging all day, my energy was low, like I was very tired. Brian is a great fitness instructor, in that he learned my limits quickly and enjoys pushing the boundaries. I am often sore afterward, but the results of pushing myself to get healthy and in shape keep me going through the pain. Now, while I still have a long road ahead of me, I have come a very long way as well. Regina Reed- Telecommunications Administrator
I started taking advantage of the Pirate Fitness Center and "Boot Camp" just over a year ago and the differences it has made in me are practically immeasurable. I feel better, I look better, I'm stronger and have more energy than I've had in years. And I know that this is just the beginning, I almost can't wait to see where I'll be in another year. I've gone from not knowing how to properly exercise on my own to being able to plan my own diverse exercise routines for days I don't have access to the Fitness Center.
Before I started working out there, you couldn't have forced me to run a 5K at gunpoint (and I wouldn't have been able to even finish it, anyway). Now, just a year later, I've run in multiple 5K events and even placed 3rd in my age group in one of them. I am signed up to do my first ever marathon this fall in Washington, DC. I remember being out of breath from climbing the stairs by Copley, and now we run up and down them for a workout. The guidance and motivation I've received while working out there are as important as my own self-determination to keep going. Since joining I've convinced other co-workers to start going with me, and they're seeing great improvements in themselves as well. As we now say, "You can't spell Fitness without I.T."
Honestly, this is (in my opinion) the single best benefit I receive for working at Park University; having access to the Pirate Fitness Center and having an organized class with a certified instructor running it has made all of the difference. If I could have done this myself, I would have long ago. This is the difference. I now schedule my day around my hour of working out and look forward to it every single day. I make sure my calendar is clear from noon until 1pm so I can get over to the Fitness Center and get my exercise in. It really is hard to believe what a huge difference it makes in your life. It was definitely up to me to take the first step of getting in there, but once I was there I've received nothing but support, guidance and motivation to continue to get better. That makes it really easy to keep coming back, regardless of how sore I am the next day!
