Tobacco Use Policy

As of July 1, 2015, the Parkville Campus of Park University is entirely smoke-free. The Downtown Kansas City, Missouri; Independence, Missouri; and Austin, Texas campuses will also be smoke-free as of July 1, 2015.

Violations of the smoking policy carry a $20 fine per violation.  Repeat violations are addressed as follows:

  • For Students: Student Conduct Hearing
  • For Employees: Disciplinary action including, but not limited to, notification of supervisors, department heads, or the respective area Vice President

We ask all members of the Park University community to show respect for smokers and non-smokers. Enforcing the new policy is a shared responsibility, so we ask for your assistance and cooperation. Any concerns should be brought to the attention of the Campus Safety Department by calling (816)584-6444. Campus Safety will enforce the policy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  If a Campus Safety staff member observes a violation of the smoking policy, that staff member will issue a citation for the violation.  Given Park University has an engaged community that cares about its people and its campus, a collaborative approach to the enforcement of this policy will have a positive and immediate impact on our campus.


Who is affected?

All persons on the Park University campuses in Parkville, Kansas City, Independence, and Austin, Texas campuses should abide by this policy: students, faculty, staff, alumni, contractors, and any visitors.

In all other Park-leased spaces (Campus Centers, Education Centers, and more) – students and employees should abide by the smoking policies of that building.

What products are prohibited by this policy?

The policy prohibits the smoking of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, pipes, cigars, hookahs and water pipes, plus the use of smokeless tobacco.

Where can I smoke after the policy is implemented?

Any non-Park University owned property and in accordance with the City of Parkville law.  Park’s property ends at highway 9 at the south side and east side of campus, as you reach Coffey Road to the east of campus, and as you reach Woodward Rd to the North of campus (adjacent to the Health Department).  Please note that smoking is not allowed in personal vehicles on campus property.

Are other universities smoke-free?

Yes. More than 1,000 other U.S. colleges and universities have either tobacco-free or smoke-free policies in place for the entire campus, indoors and outdoors.
