In conjunction with the Coming of Age Kansas City organization, Park University will host a series of “Shaping Your Future” educational workshops for adults 50 and older beginning in late May.
The Shaping Your Future educational series begins with “Explore Your Future," a four-part series of workshops that guides individuals to embrace their next phase of life, including community engagement, lifelong learning and encore careers. The workshops do not include financial/investment advice. The sessions include:
• What has influenced me? — Participants reflect on what has meant most to them in their lives and brought the greatest fulfillment while they explore people and events that have influenced them, their lives’ themes, patterns and strengths.
• Who am I now? — Through self-discovery and assessment, participants identify where they are in their lives and what talents they have. They explore values and motivators, passions and interests, individual gifts, strengths and aspirations.
• How can I realize my dreams? — Once participants gain more self-awareness, they address practical ways to align their values, passions and gifts by learning creative techniques for generating life options, strategies to fuse passion, purpose and personal strengths, and ways to imagine potential.
• How do I create an engaged life? — Participants develop individual action plans based on specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (SMART) goals; real and perceived challenges; and resources to help them reach their goals.
Facilitators for Shaping Your Future are Kay Barnes, Park University senior academic ambassador and liaison, and former mayor of Kansas City, Mo., and Sandra Mellinger, chief executive officer of Coming of Age Kansas City.
The workshops will be held at Park University’s recently remodeled Downtown Kansas City, Mo., Campus Center, on the third floor of Commerce Tower, 911 Main Street. The initial workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 24 (Sessions 1 and 2), and Wednesday, May 31 (Sessions 3 and 4), both from 1 to 5 p.m. Additional workshops are scheduled throughout the rest of the year — two sessions each month through November, except June and August when one workshop will be held during the month. The June workshop will be held on Thursday, June 22, and Thursday, June 29, both from 8 a.m. to noon.
The cost to attend the Explore Your Future workshop (all four sessions) is $175 if paid in full one week prior to the start of each workshop; thereafter, the fee is $195. To register or for more information, contact Mellinger at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The workshops are presented in collaboration with the Downtown Council and the Mid-America Regional Council. Office Products Alliance is co-sponsoring the May workshop and EnCorps 45 is co-sponsoring the June workshop.
