Park University will celebrate its annual Alumni Weekend, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, on the University’s Parkville Campus, including a number of events that are open to the public.
Highlighting the weekend of events is the Park University Alumni Association’s 66th annual awards luncheon on Friday, starting at noon at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown. The ceremony will honor four Park alumni, including Kansas City, Mo., Chief of Police Darryl Forté, a 1990 Park graduate who will receive the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award recognizes Park University alumni who have distinguished themselves through career service or community achievements.
Author, anti-bullying expert and community volunteer SuEllen Fried, ’75, will receive the Marlowe Sherwood Memorial Service Award, which recognizes Park alumni for volunteer service to community/civic organizations. The Rev. David Laird Barclay, ’53, a retired Park University Alumni Council member and volunteer, will receive the Torchlighter Award, given to honor individuals who have made significant, long-standing contributions and commitment to Park University, whether alumni, faculty or friend. Rodrigo Neri, ’09, co-founder and chief product officer at Instin, will receive the Park Promising Young Professional Award, which recognizes a Park alumnus/a who shows exceptional promise of leadership and contribution to their profession and/or community.

In addition, the annual Park Pirate Family Fun Day is scheduled for Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. This free event for the community will include bounce houses, balloons and face painting for kids, a magician, a photo booth, funnel cakes and more.
A variety of other events are open to the public, including a presentation on peace journalism, a tour and open house of the newly remodeled McAfee Memorial Library and a Mexican fiesta dinner and women's volleyball match on Friday, and a demonstration and open house for Park’s Ellen Finley Earhart Nursing Program, a barbecue lunch, and women's volleyball and men's and women's soccer matches on Saturday.
