Oct. 3, 2013 — Park University’s School of Education and the Dorothy Harper Watson Literacy Center will host the annual River Read Children’s Literature Festival on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the University’s Parkville Campus. The Festival provides hundreds of fourth and fifth grade students from the Park Hill (Mo.) School District the opportunity to meet local authors, explore literature and learn about the writing craft.
For many of the students who attend the River Read, this is their first time on a college campus. Park welcomes the opportunity to share its beautiful Parkville Campus with young learners and encourage the love of literacy through inspirational and motivational presentations.
Shannon Cuff, Ph.D., assistant professor of education and area coordinator of language and literacy, said the students have a unique opportunity to speak with children’s authors who’ve had work published.
“Children learn details about the writing process and the research that goes into writing a book,” said Cuff. “Additionally, because the River Read Festival is held at Park University, children have the opportunity to dream big and envision their future as an undergraduate student.”
