Aug. 19, 2013 — Park University’s School of Business has earned recognition for curriculum alignment from the Society of Human Resource Management, the largest human resources professional development association worldwide. Park is one of only two Kansas City area-based schools to earn this recognition. This distinction is based on SHRM’s evaluation that assessed the topics, courses, business contexts and delivery methods of Park’s human resources program.
The SHRM’s curriculum is devised to generate commonality between human resource management programs to set a standard minimum skill set needed by employers who seek to fill HR professional positions. The plan offers flexibility in devising HR courses, while providing a minimum level of standardization for content being taught at the university level.
Nicholas Miceli, Ph.D., associate professor of management and human resources, said the recognition is a compliment to the entire faculty of Park’s School of Business.
“This means that Park students majoring in the human resources degree program are being prepared for the workplace,” said Miceli. “Further, when our students and graduates want to take the SHRM certification exams (Professional in Human Resources and Senior PHR), they have a strong grounding in the various areas of knowledge that they need to be familiar with to increase their chances of passing the exam.”
The sample course templates provided in the HR Curriculum Guidebook identify a variety of options essential to human resources, and the application of relevant business or policy skills. All sample modules allow faculty to organize topics in a variety of different ways.
“This distinction is a testament to Park’s focused degree program,” said Dr. Miceli. “The HR curriculum includes practical application and case studies, so that the students have a better feel for what they will encounter in the workplace.”
