A mixed media exhibit featuring the works of artist, painter and photographer Michelle Childers will be on display in Park University’s Campanella Gallery, Monday, July 29, through Saturday, Aug. 30. The title of Childers’ exhibit is “My Life Sentence.”
Childers, who has her home and studio in Independence, Mo., is a Park University alumna who graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts. In previous exhibitions, her display of large scale collage and abstract expressionist style multimedia paintings and installed environments have addressed broad political, social and environmental issues. However, in this new exhibit, Childers explores her personal history — the vulnerability of a life of physical, emotional and sexual identity challenges — with a display of large paintings, altered photographs and three-dimensional objects.
This exhibit addresses mature themes and is not appropriate for children. A reception will be held for Childers on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Gallery, which will include a performance by the band, Sour Apple Surgery.
