Frequently Asked Questions

Is this trip exclusive to Park University?

Yes, only people who are affiliated with Park University (and their guests) will be traveling on this trip. We ask that at least one member of your group be a Park alumnus/a, student, faculty member, staff, trustee and/or donor. Family members and friends are welcome.

Who is handling the reservations and arrangements?

Park University is handling collection of deposits, payment of the balance due and registration forms. Collette Vacations will handle all trip arrangements.

What is the projected size of this travel group?

This trip has a maximum capacity of 38 travelers. There is a minimum requirement of 19 for the trip to operate. Reserve a spot early to be one of the 38.

Why does the price change with the number of travelers?

Since this is a Park exclusive trip, we must cover the entire costs of the trip to maintain the exclusivity. The motor coach holds 38 people. The cost of the trip has been divided over 35 travelers. To maintain the exclusivity if we do not sell 35 tickets, the group will be charged the additional charges. A minimum of 19 travelers are needed for the trip to operate. If less than 25 travelers sign up, an additional $480 will be charged per person. If the count is 25 to 19, an additional $70 per person will apply. If the count is 30 to 34, $30 per person will be added.

How do I reserve a spot?

Complete the registration form and send it with a $250 deposit to Park University, attn.: Julie McCollum, 8700 NW River Park Drive, Parkville, MO 64152. Make your check payable to Park University. Please note that if you want the cancellation and trip insurance, you must purchase it at the time you make the deposit. If using a credit card, you may fax the registration form to (816) 505-5409.

When is the deposit due?

To receive the early registration discount of $250, the deposit must be received no later than Aug. 10, 2014.
If you do not make the early deadline, to assure that you have a seat on the airline with the group, the deposit must be received no later than Sept. 4, 2014. At that time any seats unsold in the Park University block will be released and available only on a first come first serve bases at the current rate.

When is the balance of the payment due?

Full payment is due to Park University on Dec. 5, 2014.

What airline will be used?

The airline has not been assigned to the trip this far in advance. However, Collette Vacations prefers to use South African Airways for the leg of the trip across the Atlantic, arriving in Johannesburg.

Is airfare included in the price?

Airfare from Kansas City is included in the price. Collette Vacations can quote an adjusted price based on your departure and return locations.

Is there a “single supplement” for this trip?

The single supplement (additional price for those travelers who do not want a roommate) is $1500 for the South Africa Tour and $600 for the Victoria Falls extension. This addition covers the cost of the hotel rooms, which would normally be split between two tickets. A very limited number of single rooms are available.

Do I need a passport or Visa?

Yes, you will need a passport for both South Africa and Zimbabwe. A visa is required for Zimbabwe and depending on your travel plans and citizenship, may be required for South Africa.

Passports are the responsibility of the individual travelers. Visas may be obtained during the trip. See below for the specific needs of each leg of the trip.

For South Africa, passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay, plus you must have at least 2 blank pages remaining in your passport (side by side) to allow the entry visa to be issued for South Africa. Failure to comply with this law will result in denied entry. These pages are in addition to the endorsement/amendment pages at the back of the passport.

If you are a United States citizen and do not plan to extend your stay past 90 days, you will only be required to complete a short form at the airport. If you are a citizen of another country go to for an explanation of requirements.

For the Victoria Falls extension (Zimbabwe), you will also need a passport and Visa. Be sure you have one blank page in your passport. The required Visa may be completed at the airport upon arrival and will cost approximately $45.

Are vaccinations needed?
Since we will be traveling to Kruger National Park, out tour operator recommends that you take anti-malaria medication.  In addition, you may wish to get  thyphoid and Hep A shots. Consult your doctor.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes information about suggested vaccinations and precautions on its website. Visit (South Africa) and (Victoria Falls extension).

Will we visit Robben Island?
Robben Island is not included in the official itinerary. However, it may be possible to make arrangements to take a tour during Day 11, when travels have an afternoon at leisure in Cape Town.

Here is a list of the hotels that are planned for this trip. There may be changes made to the list but equivalent substitutions will be made, if necessary.

What will the weather be like?

Our trips is scheduled towards the latter part of summer, very early autumn. Johannesburg will have warm days (maybe even a quick shower) and reasonably warm nights throughout (about 65 to 82 degrees --- always a cool breeze). As of February 2014, Johannesburg is a high of 81F and a low of 62F... Cape Town and Kruger about the same... This will be the case throughout our stay next year at this same time.

What do I need for adapting my appliances to use electricity in South Africa?

The South African electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ.
You will need adapters to that are 15 amp 3-prong or 5 amp 2-prong, with round pins.
Most US-made appliances will require a transformer.
Most hotel rooms have 110 volt outlets for appliances.
