In the late summer of 2010, a scared and apprehensive Philippe Vieira arrived in Kansas City from Cote d’Ivoire. As he says, “I didn’t understand anything in English.” He took the Compass-ESL test and placed into Beginner I; unfortunately, since there were too few students at that level, he ended up in Intermediate I. He tried his best, but he remembers that time as a real struggle. It took him a year before he felt more comfortable in English; now he feels quite at home. The young man who scored 47 in the Reading section of the Compass, and 43 on the Grammar/Usage section, two years later is scoring in the 90s in Reading and high 70s in Grammar and Usage. Philippe’s advice to fellow EIL students: “Don’t be afraid to learn English. It takes a lot of time, but you get there.”

We are proud to acknowledge Philippe’s hard work and steady progress. Congratulations, Philippe!
